ELM 2 is proud to host a Pop-Up Mentoring Program (PUMP) event. PUMP (sponsored by the LSA Committee on Gender Equity) provides on-site, one-off mentoring meetings at linguistics conferences around the world. PUMP matches one or more mentees with mentors who can provide quick but personalized career advice to linguists at any stage, in any location, and in any career: anyone can be a mentee or mentor, the more the merrier.
You can register as a mentee here, and as a mentor here. We almost always have a lot of mentee interest so we especially encourage relatively senior linguists to apply as mentors if they think they can. The deadline for registering as a mentee or a mentor for this event is May 13. After you register, you will receive an email matching you with your mentor or mentee, with details about how to meet. The main mentoring session is scheduled for the lunch break of Thursday, May 19, the second day of the conference. However, mentoring meetings can also happen during other, individually arranged sessions. Please check back soon for details!
Please email Jessica Rett (rett@ucla.edu) with any questions about the ELM 2 PUMP event.
What is the Pop-Up Mentoring Project?
The Pop-Up Mentoring Program (PUMP) is a series of events that travel around from conference to conference, giving anyone who is interested a chance to have a brief meeting with a mentor outside of their official support system. Mentors and mentees are paired by a PUMP coordinator based on shared interests for a one-time, no-strings-attached mentoring session. The event is open to all, regardless of career stage or gender and the purpose of the mentoring sessions is to help more junior colleagues with a variety of potential problems and questions that arise in a professional context, such as work/life balance, minority status, and graduate or job applications. These events have proved popular and helpful for everyone involved. PUMP events are open to all!
